Powder coating in Buchen in the Neckar-Odenwald region

Looking for a partner to powder-coat your metal components? Erhardt ERKO is based at Siemensstraße 15 in Buchen (Odenwald), Germany. We agree the material, surface condition and required finish with you, from preparation to the right colour and texture.

Our machining, fabrication and surface finishing can be planned together. This allows fits, suspension points and visible surfaces to be considered during machining. Assembly, packaging and further steps are agreed for each project.

Maximum component dimensions: 3,000 × 2,000 × 1,500 mm. Geometry and suspension must also be assessed. Coating thickness, quantity and a suitable coating system are agreed from your drawing and service conditions.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating applies dry coating powder to suitable components. In a typical electrostatic process, charged powder particles are sprayed onto the grounded component.

During the subsequent heating process, the powder melts and, for the appropriate powder systems, cures into a continuous coating. This creates a separate surface film whose properties depend on the system used and the processing conditions.

Why powder-coat metal components?

Powder coating is used to give components a defined colour, texture or protective finish. Appearance and service requirements determine the choice of coating system.

  • Opaque colours for a coordinated appearance.
  • Different textures and gloss levels.
  • Protection through a system matched to the application and pre-treatment.
  • Mechanical durability depends on powder, coating build-up and service conditions.
  • Dry powder application without liquid paint as a carrier medium.

Aluminium, steel and other materials

Aluminium and steel are typical materials for powder coating. Suitable preparation and compatibility with the subsequent heating process are essential. For steel, corrosion protection and durability depend particularly on the complete coating system and the environment.

Depending on the component, brass, stainless steel and graphite-containing plastics may also be suitable. Material, surface condition, geometry and temperature resistance are assessed for each project.

RAL colours, texture and gloss

Colour alone does not fully describe a powder coating. A smooth matt surface looks different from a glossy or textured finish in the same colour. Specify colour, texture and gloss together.

We offer RAL and special colours on request, with smooth, fine-textured and coarse-textured finishes. Gloss, satin and matt options are available. Colour availability and a suitable powder system are agreed for your project.

A screen cannot replace a physical sample. Colour and gloss may look different on the finished component. A suitable sample and clearly defined requirements help coordinate visible parts.

Why is pre-treatment important?

The coating film requires a suitable substrate. Contamination, residues or an unsuitable surface condition can impair adhesion and the result. Careful preparation is therefore part of the coating system.

Our pre-treatment options include alkaline degreasing and etching, and phosphating. The appropriate process is chosen to suit the material and application. Not every pre-treatment is suitable for every material.

From prepared component to coating

Component assessment is generally followed by suitable pre-treatment, drying where required, suspension and powder application. The component then undergoes the agreed heating process and cools down.

This is a general process overview. Temperatures, times, checks and packaging must suit the powder, component and agreed specification. Universal curing parameters are therefore not a suitable basis for a technical enquiry.

What should designers consider?

Powder coating adds material, which can affect threads, fits, sealing and assembly surfaces. Mark areas that must remain uncoated and agree masking options in advance.

Components require suspension and electrical contact for coating. Coating may be absent or restricted at these points. Suspension points and visible surfaces should therefore be considered together during planning.

  • Specify the material and any temperature-sensitive attachments.
  • Consider cavities, blind holes and possible liquid residues.
  • Mark functional surfaces and tolerances on your drawing.
  • Agree suspension points, required colour, texture and gloss.

Powder coating or anodising?

Powder coating creates a separate film with opaque colours and different surface textures. Anodising converts the surface of suitable aluminium into an oxide layer while retaining its metallic character.

The choice depends on material, service conditions, appearance and dimensional requirements. For aluminium, it is useful to compare both options for the specific component.

Prepare your coating enquiry

Provide the following information so we can assess feasibility and the required finish:

  • Component: Material, drawing or photograph, and dimensions.
  • Quantity: Number of components and required delivery date.
  • Finish: RAL or special colour, texture and gloss.
  • Application: Indoor or outdoor use and particular service conditions.
  • Function: Threads, fits, visible surfaces and areas that must remain uncoated.

Frequently asked questions about powder coating

Can aluminium be powder-coated?

Yes, provided the material, preparation and coating system are suitable. Requirements for visible parts and dimensionally critical areas should be agreed before processing.

Are all RAL colours available immediately?

The availability of particular colours and powder systems is checked for each project. Specify texture and gloss as well; a RAL reference alone does not fully describe the finish.

Is powder coating scratch-proof?

Powder coating can be mechanically durable, but it is not indestructible. Resistance depends on the system, processing and actual service conditions.

How thick is powder coating?

Coating thickness depends on the powder, geometry and application. The required specification for fits and functional surfaces is agreed for each project; we do not publish an unconfirmed thickness range.

What should I include in my coating enquiry?

Send material, drawing or photograph, dimensions, quantity, colour, texture, gloss and service conditions. Mark functional surfaces and preferred suspension points. Find the right person on our contact page.
